Core Functions

The Prevention Program Assistant is responsible for providing general assistance in implementing prevention programs in the communities such as the SNAP (Stop Now and Plan) and the Alternative Suspension programs. The incumbent provides on-the-ground support during the delivery of the programs, ensures adequate attention and focus on children with special needs, and communicates with parents regarding their child’s progress.

Functional Responsibilities:

  • Engage in planning activities/sessions to ensure all material and classroom is in proper settings for SNAP Program.
  • Substitutes Primary Youth Worker (PYW) when they are away from the site for meetings at schools or when requested by Coordinator.
  • Monitor classes to ensure a proper learning environment is established for the SNAP Program.
  • Assist the Prevention Program Officer (PPO) in presenting and implementing any other programs in schools or community places.
  • Provide general security on service sites for the Alternative Suspension Program.
  • Assist the PPO in presenting and implementing any other programs in schools or community places.

Interaction/Communication Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a good working relationship with all stakeholders such as teachers, parents and community members for SNAP Program.
  • Assist with meeting the needs of the children including individual befriending to maintain positive relationships.
  • Supervise and support students with assigned schoolwork for the Alternative Suspension Program.
  • Maintain strong partnerships with schools (elementary and high school) that refer students to the Alternative Suspension Program.
  • Promote within communities the value of Alternative Suspension Program and intervention with high-risk youth by assisting PYW in organizing activities during special community events.
  • Intervene with students on an individual basis and in a group setting.
  • Communicate with parents when needed (e.g. when the student is absent).

Reporting Responsibilities:

  • Communicate and/or write daily reports to inform the PYW, the PPO, and the Manager on activities completed as well as participation and engagement of students present.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and skills in area(s) of responsibility.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

Education:

  • College Diploma in Social Work or related field.

Experience:

  • One to three years of relevant work experience.

Language:

  • Fluency in English.
  • Fluency in verbal Cree is an asset.

Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Good knowledge and understanding of Cree culture, customs and history.
  • Customer-focused and service-oriented.
  • Good empathy and listening skills.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively.
  • Proven ability to be discreet and maintain confidentiality.
  • Proven organizational skills and presentation skills.
  • Strong judgment and proven ability to problem-solve.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products.

Additional Requirements:

  • Typical office setting where there are no unusual physical demands.
  • Willingness to work irregular hours occasionally.
  • Must agree to undergo a background check.

The Cree Nation Government may, at its discretion, waive any or all of the aforementioned requirements if a suitable candidate who is a JBNQA beneficiary accepts to follow a training plan determined by the Cree Nation Government as a condition of employment
