Legal Aid Alberta is seeking a full-time Human Resources Manager in our downtown Edmonton office. This position will appeal to an individual that is looking for a challenge and wants an opportunity to impact process improvement, program design and value creation of HR programs and initiatives that align with strategic business priorities. As a publicly funded, non-profit organization, Legal Aid Alberta provides affordable legal services in family law, domestic violence, child welfare, immigration, and youth and adult criminal defense. We are Alberta-wide, with 300 staff and 1,200 private practice lawyers helping people overcome their legal challenges in more than 75 communities across the province.

Job Description  

Reporting to the Director, People and Culture some of the key responsibilities include:

 

  • Managing day-to-day HR operational activities of the talent lifecycle, actively participate in and oversee key HR functions including recruitment, selection and onboarding, compensation and job evaluation, performance management including Objectives and Key Results and annual review cycle, employee relations, labour relations, and occupational health & safety
  • Aligning HR initiatives and programs with strategic priorities and measuring the impact and value to achieving goals and key business results.  
  • Providing functional advice on key areas of responsibility and support to the Director, People and Culture and the Executive Committee.
  • Managing effective execution of day-to-day activities of the Human Resources Services team ensuring the team demonstrates a highly responsive, thoughtful, and proactive approach to service delivery.
  • Leading the department’s response to relevant organizational initiatives and projects that require HR operational support.
  • Enhancing existing HR data analytics and establishing a regular cadence of reporting to management using a variety of reports/dashboards and metrics. 
  • Leading annual performance planning/management cycle.
  • Utilize process improvement methodology to lead team in review of existing HR programs, processes, and procedures. Identifying gaps and implementing changes that support automation, simplification and streamlining of existing methods to promote executional excellence of the HR team.
  • Leading the team in the audit, review, development, and implementation of new or updated Human Resources policies that align with industry best practice.
  • Leading HR team in fostering open positive communication and resolution of any disputes or grievances that may arise.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • A Degree in Business, Management, Human Resources, Organizational Development or a related discipline. 
  • 8 + years of experience in progressively more senior human resources roles.
  • Minimum 2 years of labour relations experience.
  • Demonstrated people leadership experience.
  • CPHR designation or working towards, will be considered a strong asset.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of progressive HR management practices, principles, legislation, employment laws, standards and regulations. 
  • Solid knowledge in database management, documentation, and workflows. Strong Proficiency in HRIS systems such as Peoplesoft, Ceridian or Workday.
  • Management skills to lead, plan, organization, coordinate and complete complex, concurrent projects independently or in team environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with employees at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated abilities in facilitation, coaching and presentation skills.  
  • Strong abilities to influence individual, team and organizational change across internal and external stakeholders.
  • High level of planning and executional skills.
  • Knowledgeable in Labour relations, including bargaining process and practices and Occupational Health and Safety Standards, approaches and launching of programs and initiatives.
  • Understanding of strategic HR partnership in driving business results and educating leaders on how to effectively partner with HR.
  • Working knowledge of systems thinking, strategic planning and project management.
  • Understanding of budget methods and workforce planning methodology.
  • Solid data analysis skills to interpret HR metrics and trends.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.

Requirements

This position requires 10% regional travel within Alberta

Successful candidate will be required to provide an acceptable criminal record check.
