Position Title
: Relief Personal Care Aid

Program: Lux
Union: BCGEU
Salary: $30.64, plus nights and weekend shift differentials (bcgeu grid 34)
Schedule: Positions are on-call / casual relief to start – filling in for regular staff
Hours: Shifts are generally 8 hours long: 11:30pm – 7:30am / 7:30am – 3:30pm / 3:30pm – 11:30pm.
Start Date: As soon as possible     
 

Pursuant To The Provincial Health Officer's Order, The Incumbent Of This Position Is Required To Be Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19. We Will Only Consider Applicants Who Are Fully Vaccinated, Or Who Have Received An Exemption From The Provincial Health Office. Proof Of Either Must Be Provided In Advance Of Any Offer Of Employment Being Made. 


In addition, you will be paid a shift premium of $2.50 per hour for the entirety of each night shift worked. “Night shift” means any shift in which the major portion occurs between 12:00 midnight and 8:00 AM.

Position Summary 
Reporting to the Management Team or designate, the Personal Care Aide is responsible for providing assistance, support, and basic skill training to tenants in their living environment while encouraging independence, responsibility, and healthy lifestyle choices.  They will also have a focus on medication support, hygiene assistance, housekeeping, harm reduction and coordination of community resources. The Personal Care Aide will observe and document the program participants health condition and environment, reporting and addressing unsafe conditions, and provide support and guidance. 

Program Summary
The Lux provides 92 units of supported housing to people who are coping with the realities of homelessness, substance use, and complex physical and mental health concerns. The Lux is staffed 24/7 by support workers, the building is monitored 24/7 by front desk staff at the main entrance.

QUALIFICATION
Many forms of education and experience are valued, including volunteering and lived experience of mental illness / addiction/ homelessness; Minimum education and experience includes:

  • Health Care Attendant Certificate, including registration in good standing with the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry, or equivalent education/experience 
  • A minimum of two (2) years post-secondary education in mental health & addictions and a minimum of two (2) years' experience in a similar setting with a mental health and addictions related agency, with responsibility for front line service delivery, crisis intervention, debriefing and support, conflict resolution and case planning or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.   
  • Extensive working knowledge of psychosocial rehabilitation approaches and services including individual service plan development and implementation and life skills training   
  • A solid background and knowledge of concurrent disorders with related work experience   
  • Two (2) years experience working with people with mental illness or those at risk of homelessness and a demonstrated commitment to promoting empowerment and individual/group advocacy   
  • Certificates in CPR, First Aid, and Food Safe,  
  • Satisfactory criminal record check   
  • Satisfactory result from a TB skin test   
  • Naloxone Training

  • Ability to respond to problematic behaviour using an understanding of the behaviour's context and function  
  • Ability to work in a harm reduction environment which includes program participants suites, as well as familiarization with the principles of harm reduction. 
  • Ability to support life-skills  
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.   
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision, exercise initiative and good judgment 
  • Ability to operate related equipment.   
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.   
  • Ability to organize and prioritize.   
  • Ability to observe and recognize changes in program participants.   
  • Ability to establish and maintain rapport with program participants, staff and management and collateral service providers.   
  • Home management skills.   
  • Ability to instruct.   
  • Ability to analyze and resolve problems.   
  • Ability to resolve crisis situations effectively and safely  
  • Conflict resolution and crisis intervention skills.    
  • Physically able to carry out the duties of the position 
  • Ability to assist with medication support and to follow established policies and procedures.   
  • Advocacy skills.   
  • Knowledge of Psychosocial Rehabilitation and Concurrent Disorders including theories and methods.   
  • Knowledge of the bio-psychosocial addictions model, including stages of change and harm reduction.  
  • Basic sound knowledge of diagnoses, treatment and support resources in the areas of substance use, physical health, including HIV and Hepatitis C. 
  • Ability to work with program participants using hope-inducing strategies  
  • Knowledge of overdose prevention education 
  • Comfortable working in environments where pests may be present 
  • Demonstrates understanding of oppression and marginalization specifically related to the experience of women, mental health consumers and substance users, the Indigenous community, and other marginalized women
